Rive
No major design system ships a runtime layer. That’s the gap Dimensions 2 (Continuity) and 4 (Adaptive Motion) describe: the design artifact and the runtime artifact are the same thing, but we’ve been shipping them as separate problems. Rive is the tool that closes that gap better than anything else available right now.
This page is about what that means — not as a product endorsement, but as an argument about where the runtime layer has to go. Rive happens to be the closest production-ready answer.

A Rive state machine is not a timeline animation. It’s a graph of states with inputs, outputs, transitions, and blend nodes. You drive it from continuous data — a number from 0 to 1, a boolean, an enum — and the visual properties respond smoothly and predictably. A confidence indicator that blends from green to amber to red based on a model’s output probability isn’t three states with a transition between them; it’s a single state driven by a continuous input.
That’s the shape of the runtime layer AI-native design needs. CSS transitions can move a value from A to B over a duration. They can’t take a live data stream and render it continuously. The Web Animations API gets closer, but you’re writing imperative code, not declarative design. Rive lets the design artifact be the runtime artifact — you open a Rive file in the editor, you author the state machine visually, and the same file runs in production with data bindings.
It’s not the only answer. Theatre.js, Lottie, Framer Motion all live in the same territory. But Rive’s state-machine model is the closest thing to a runtime primitive for data-driven UI that exists today, and it’s the reason I think the next major design system will ship with a runtime layer at its core.

- Driving Rive from LLM streaming output. Data bindings from an AI response stream to Rive inputs. Code: a React component that takes a streaming confidence value and renders it into a Rive-driven visual. The state machine handles the blending; the component handles the stream.
- Why CSS transitions can’t deliver Dimensions 2 and 4. A direct comparison — same confidence indicator implemented with CSS transitions vs. Rive. Why the CSS version feels discrete and the Rive version feels continuous, even when the underlying data is the same.
- The three-layer stack. Design system (tokens, components) + interaction runtime (Rive or equivalent) + constraint schema (the Dimension 8 layer). Why all three are needed and why shipping only the first two gets you to a 6, not a 9.
- A proof of concept. A live AI response card — confidence, streaming, citation disclosure — with the motion layer driven by Rive from Claude’s API. Code,
.rivfile, and a live example embedded on the page. - Where Rive falls short. It’s not a design system. It doesn’t handle semantics, accessibility tree structure, or token inheritance. It’s a motion runtime, not a design runtime. What it would need to graduate from “best tool for Dimension 4” to “piece of a design system’s core.”
